Balloon Bombs

Here's a sad chapter of American history I never knew about. There were only six World War II casualties in the continental US, in an incident that happened in the foothills about sixty miles east of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

During the war Japan sent balloons containing explosive devices floating over the Pacific. Several touched down along the west coast.

Today there's a memorial just off highway NF-348 that marks the tragic spot where a group of five children and a pregnant minister's wife discovered one of the deadly balloons on May 5, 1945, on their way to a Saturday picnic in the woods. A nearby pine still bears shrapnel scars from the blast.
